General Information
Medication and First Aid
When children require medication to be administered at school, the child’s name and full details must be provided in writing to the school office. When appropriate, medicine is stored in the school’s medicine cabinet.
In the event of your child becoming injured or unwell, a staff member will render first aid and parents and caregivers will be contacted. Please ensure that your contact details and emergency contact details are always up to date. It is important that the office has accurate details of parent and caregiver contact details.
Community Health Nurse.
Our Public Health Nurse who visits the school regularly is able to support students and families. Please phone the school office if you wish to arrange a meeting with her.
Dental Clinic
Our dental clinic is operational once again for a short term period whilst the mobile dental clinic is being made available. The phone number for the Maungatapu Clinic is 544 0857.
Should the need for urgent dental work be required, please call 0800TALKTOOTH.
Road Safety.
All cyclists must wear an approved safety standards helmet. The Board of Trustees recommends that children should be 9 years of age or older to ride a bicycle to school.
Maungatapu Road is particularly busy especially before school and at 3 pm. Parents are advised to park legally along Maungatapu Road or in Ririnui Place when dropping off or collecting their children and are reminded to use the pedestrian crossings at all times. School Road Patrols monitor the crossing outside the school, each afternoon.
School Buses.
School buses run from Ohauiti and Windermere to transport pupils to and from school. Pupils must live more than 3.2 km from the school to be eligible for free bus transport. School bus details and fares are available from the school office, or Mr Lester Stephens, Associate Principal. All pupils travelling to school on the bus are expected to display sensible and responsible behaviour at all times.
School bus fares will be increasing in 2012. For more information please follow this link: www.schooltransport.org.nz/
Stationery.
The school office sells complete stationery packs for new entrant students starting school for the first time. Stationery requirement lists are available from the office for all other students so that parents can purchase books at retail outlets.
Book Club.
At regular intervals, children have the opportunity to purchase books through the Scholastic Book Club. Pamphlets and order forms are distributed to pupils each term. There is no obligation to buy.
Communication.
Newsletters are our most important means of communication and are distributed via the children usually every two to three weeks. They will also feature on this website.
Sharing sessions between parents and teachers are held in terms 1 and 3. Written pupil reports are issued in term 4.
The school encourages face to face communication if you have a concern or query. Please feel free to phone and make an appointment with your child’s teacher or the Principal if you have a matter which you would like to discuss.
After school times are more appropriate on Thursdays and Fridays for meetings with teachers. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday afternoons are reserved for staff and management meetings.
Charter and School Policies
These are available for viewing from the main office. Policies are written to guide the school’s activities and are regularly reviewed. Community input is regularly sought through surveys and questionnaires.
School facilities.
Maungatapu School has worked to develop a number of fine facilities which we are happy to share with our community.
Feel free to make use of our grounds after school, during the weekends and in the holidays.
Swimming pool keys can be purchased in early November for use of the pool outside of school hours. Keys cost $70.00 with a $20.00 refund when the key is returned at the end of the swimming season.
The school and community hall is available for hire outside school hours. Details are available from the school office regarding hall hire.
Please help us to keep our school in a safe, clean and welcoming condition by refraining from dropping litter or allowing children to skateboard on our decks and seats out of school hours.
We look forward to meeting you and having your child with us at Maungatapu School.
